| You know those days when no matter how hard you try, things just don't
go your way? Not the big events [thankfully] but the little stuff. You
reach for your keys, drop them on the floor, then kick them across the
floor when you're grabbing for them. The sweater you put on has a
stain, so you put on another, only to find it has a hole in it. And so
on. Yesterday, I had one of those days. My closet cleaning aside [which
felt fabulous, by the way] I just kept entering into one exercise in
accidental frustration after another. But the worst was last night with Riley and her new yellow rubber ball.
I bought the dogs a new
ball because they'd lost all their other ones, and Riley immediately
loved it. He was running all over the house with it it his mouth, in
total dog heaven. But then, just as I was feeling like the Best Pet
Owner Ever, he came over to where I was sitting on the couch and
dropped it. It rolled underneath. I reached over, dug around for a
minute, found it, and gave it back to him.
And repeat, for over two hours.
He
would NOT stop losing the ball under the couch. Every single time, even
when I moved off the couch to dissuade him, even when I started
ignoring him entirely, or tried to bribe him with another toy, no luck.
Ball rolls under, his paws around madly, starts barking, freaking out,
until I find it for him, at whicih point he knocks it under again.
Once I thought he'd broken out of the habit, by taking it into the
lounge [which is what I'm calling our new room, until I have a better
name for it] but there she lost it behind a bunch a paint cans and I
had to go retrieve it there. I was so exhausted by all this I went to
bed at 9:30. But I could still hear her out here, driving my mom and dad
nuts. Now, as I write this, he's at my feet with it.
Of
course this is insanity. But it kind of got me thinking. All those
little things that kept happening to me yesterday that made me so
frustrated: could it be that I had some sort of hand in them, even if I
didn't realize it? Maybe chaos isn't entirely indiscriminate, there's
some accountability there. I would hope I'd know enough not to keep
knocking my ball under the couch [so to speak] but then I think back at
certain times in my life and wonder if maybe I don't. Live and learn, I
guess. Hopefully Riley will too.
Have to go get Riley's ball out from under the couch now. Again.
Have a good day, everyone! | | |
| Happy New Year!
Here we are, 2006, a brand new start. I'm
still feeling optimistic about all my resolutions [probably because
it's only been two full days] which included losing weight [so I can
stop feeling in denial ]
delegating more [so I can stop being so controlling] and being nicer to
Lee [which is his request for my resolution every year, so I
tack it on just to humor him. That's nice, right?]. Anyway, I had a
lovely couple of weeks off to enjoy the holiday, with many fun
activities. In the spirit of being more organized [a resolution that I
have kept since the fourth grade!
I tackled the linen closet last night, you should see it!] a top ten
list of holiday highlights:
1. Entertaining. Yes, it was
sort of exhausting help hosting gatherings two Saturdays running, sometimes with
another on Sunday, but opening our house and our dogs and all the
attending chaos was still a lot of fun. Of course, I've now sworn I'm cooking nothing but mac and cheese for the
entire month of January, but it was worth it.
2. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, by Ann Brashares. I love it when you read a book and it immediately jumps onto your Best Of All Time list. Happened with Empire Falls, too. Now I just have to see the movie, which I've always loved, again.
3.
New paint. Ok, so this is still in progress [about to start up again
in twenty minutes or so, in fact] but it's been a great thing. To see
your same old office and guest room in a whole new way is both startling and amazing.
I love it. I'll get pictures up at some point, I promise.
4.
Speaking of pictures, my mom and dad are debating on getting a Quickcam, which is just about the coolest thing
ever. I've already figured out how to do little audio snippets [which
can be downloaded as podcasts!] as well as video ones from Miss Sammy. Brace yourself,
people. You may just meet my dogs in person. All I can say is that I
warned you.
5. The documentary Grizzly Man. Disturbing, bizarre, beautiful. Kind of like the holidays, I guess. I recommend it, it will make you think.
6.
Gilmore Girls season five. Wow. I'm at the one where Luke
and Lorelei break up, and seeing her so broken almost brought me to
tears. I think I am entirely too bonded with this character. Did you
know that the other day I saw a beige jeep and said to my cousin,
"Look! That's like Lorelei's!" I know, it's pathetic. I need to get out
more. Maybe that should be another resolution?
7. Basketball
season. Which officially starts now, after a bunch of smaller, non
conference games. Sigh.
8. Fireworks. My neighbor set
off a bunch right after midnight on the first, as he always does, and
it's the best way to start off the new year. Big bursts of color, lots
of oohing and aahing...I can only hope the rest of the year is even
close to that exciting.
9. The I Spy Memory Game. My little cousin has
been beating me at this for the last couple of days, it's horrible. I
knew I was kind of forgetful, but oh, my God. And there's nothing to
bring out your competitive side like getting creamed by a five year
old. She beat me at checkers, too. Honestly.
10. Anticipation.
Ok, so this isn't from the holidays as much as what lies ahead this
year. Now that it's 2006, it's really starting to hit me that I need to
get my school work done with because I'll be heading back to GCCHS in
the fall. I'm excited, and scared to death. I
can't wait to see all my friends and I'm terrified for the reactions to
the 'dramatic change' when I go back to GCCHS. I'm happy and crazy,
nervous and ready, a million
contradictions. It never gets
old, any part of it. But after all the hard work, I'm ready. More than.
Here we go....
Have a great day everyone!
